After decades of false starts, Anglesey's nuclear future is moving. Wylfa was confirmed as the site for the UK's small modular reactor programme in late 2025, and in April 2026 Rolls-Royce SMR signed contracts with Great British Energy–Nuclear to build Europe's first SMR fleet, with site activity beginning this year and a workforce expected to reach around 3,000 at peak.
For North Wales contractors, that's the biggest pipeline of work in a generation. Here's what to do about it — and the part most firms will miss.
Getting in: the supplier route
The route into the programme is the Rolls-Royce SMR supplier portal — hundreds of suppliers have already registered, and the programme runs supplier conferences as packages come to market. If you're an Anglesey, Gwynedd or wider North Wales firm and you're not registered, that's this week's job.
The part most firms will miss
Nuclear new-build is public-money infrastructure with explicit social value commitments attached — local employment, skills, community benefit. Those commitments don't stay at the top of the supply chain; they flow down through it. When packages are awarded, the firms that can show — in pounds, with records — what they already contribute to their community will have an edge over firms with the same trade skills and nothing on paper.
And the timing matters: Wales' new socially responsible procurement duties came into force this spring, so Welsh public bodies are now measuring and reporting social value as a legal duty. The whole environment around Wylfa will be evidence-hungry.
Who's already on board — and how they talk about it
This isn't theoretical. Through 2026 the programme has been appointing its delivery partners — Arup, Mace, WSP, Mott MacDonald and Costain among them, with programme delivery support from firms including Turner & Townsend. And it's worth listening to how the top of the chain talks about the opportunity. Turner & Townsend's UK head of energy and natural resources, Alan Sinclair, has framed getting SMR delivery right as a chance to "drive economic growth and social value".
If social value is in the language at the very top of the Wylfa programme, it will be written into the contracts that flow down to the firms underneath. The question landing on your desk won't be whether you create local value — it'll be whether you can show it.
What to do now
Register on the portal. Then start the record: every careers talk in an Ynys Môn school, every apprentice taken on, every site open day and community project — log it when it happens. By the time packages are tendered, you'll be holding a costed, documented social value history while competitors are reconstructing theirs from memory.
